Weekly Writing Tips - Maya Angelou

A woman known for her love of the written word, Maya Angelou’s list of accomplishments is nearly as long as her list of written works. She was a trusted friend of Martin Luther King Jr and was appointed to cultural commission boards by both President Jimmy Carter and President Gerald Ford. A firm lover of language in all forms, she has written plays, poems, essays, movies, and more; she also was an administrator both at the University of Ghana and Wake Forest University in North Carolina. She was truly an inspirational woman of endless strength and passion- beloved by all who knew her and thousands more who simply saw themselves in her story of overcoming pain and hardship. Her story speaks to the souls of those who have had the world try to stamp them into the ground and yet still, like dust, they rise.

“Words mean more than what is set down on paper. It takes the human voice to infuse them with shades of deeper meaning.”
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.”
“Life is going to give you just what you put in it. Put your whole heart in everything you do, and pray, then you can wait.”

of things unknown, but longed for still,
and his tune is heard on the distant hill,
for the caged bird sings of freedom.”
