Weekly Writing Tips - George Orwell once said, “I believe the modern writer who has influenced me most is W. Somerset Maugham, whom I admire immensely for his power of telling a story straightforwardly and without frills.” Use these writing tips to streamline your prose from the visionary master of direct and concise writing himself.
1. Never use a metaphor, simile, or another figure of speech that you are used to seeing in print.
2. Never use a long word where a short one will do.
3. If it is possible to cut a word out, always cut it out.
4. Break any of these rules sooner than say anything outright barbarous.
