Spring Cleaning for the Writer's Brain

The sun is out and the weather has turned warm for good- It’s officially the dreaded time where we revisit the clutter we’d built up over the past year in the lofty ambition to rid homes of the unneeded junk in a single weekend.

That’s right- spring cleaning is upon us once more. Amid boxes of receipts you forgot why you saved, half finished projects you swore you’d finish, and closets full of crumpled and forgotten sweaters, it’s easy to focus on the big areas that guests and family members notice are dirty and forget to also tidy up personal areas of our homes. Writing desks and craft corners are stacked high with boxes and piles of papers in hopes to address them once the kitchen and bathroom are scrubbed spotless.

Consider this a friendly reminder to take the time you need to address your creative areas as well, sometimes even the act of cleaning can stimulate the writer’s itch- You never know what you may find that can inspire your next writing session. 

It may seem silly but tapping into that first day of school feeling with a few new pens or pencils can be the needed spark to get you back into the habit of writing again. Try something fun and try a pen with an ink color you don’t typically use.

A blank page is full of opportunities- an empty journal even more so! It may seem daunting at first, but rather than consider it a monolith of empty space, see it as pages waiting to be filled with your new ideas!

While organizing your old notes, give them a read over. After a year of writing, it’s normal to forget ideas you had months ago. You may find that you have new takes or motivation to finish ideas that were left unfinished throughout the year.

It’s proven that a cluttered space results in a cluttered mind- take some time to dust off and clean your entire desk- especially the less used nooks and crannies. Reorganize drawers that, if they’re like mine, have accumulated a year's worth of odds and ends- you might be surprised and inspired by what you find.

A change of scenery can be great for considering new perspectives while writing- adding a small plant (fake or otherwise) or a new candle can be just that little touch of something new to make even your most well loved corner of your home feel fresh.
