In 1902, Robert T. Lawless filed his groundbreaking patent for Stellar compass and great-circle-course projector. In his own words he describes the designs. "My invention relates to navigation, and is designed to enable the mariner to steer a true course at any time of the day or night without a compass and also to lay a direct great circle-course between any two points."
