Weekly Writing Tips
This week’s writing tips are foused on the five senses and how you can more effectively use them in your writing.
Sight - One of the most commonly used senses when using description in writing is sight. But don’t be afraid to take it a step further. Describe shapes, colors and sizes to give even more detail and immerse the reader.
Sound - Think of all of the different ways you can describe a sound. Loud is one way, but what about deafening? You can also consider adding emotion into it “she spoke softly with a lover’s voice.”
Touch - You can describe objects as “rough” or “soft,” but you can also add in some emotional pulls. “He had a firm handshake like her father's.”
Taste - Taste can be more than good or bad. Try thinking about the texture, smells and even memories associated with taste to give that extra flavor to your prose.
Smell - A smell can be objective for many people, so you can also think about things with a very distinct smell and use them to convey your message. For example: “The sweet smell of summer roses” or “the pungent odour of urine-soaked carpets.”
Writing Prompt: You open up the paper to see your photo on the front page. The headline of that article? “Lies, lies, it’s all lies.” How did this happen?
